The concept for the Airbus A350-900 freighter was initially introduced in 2007 as a prospective upgrade from the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 (MD-11F), a freight transport aircraft that has a range of 9,250 km. Thirteen years later, Airbus proposed an A350F model, which would be marginally longer than the A350-900 and would require 50 orders to initiate the program that had an estimated cost of $2-3 billion. In July of 2021, the Airbus board finally approved the freighter's development based on the potential success of the A350-1000 variant, a model with a payload of more than 90 tons and a planned entry into service by 2025.

The Airbus A350-900 freighter will maintain the A350-1000's maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 319 tons and will be slightly shorter but still 6.9 m longer than the Boeing 777F. In addition, the A350-900 will provide a 10% greater freight volume at 695 m³ compared to 633 m³ offered by the Boeing 777F or 747-8F. More than that, its main deck cargo door located behind the wing, coupled with its reinforced aluminum floor beams on the main deck, will allow for a 109-ton payload, which is higher than the 103.7 ton-payload that the 777F offers. Lastly, its empty weight is 30 tons lighter than the A350-1000 and 20 tons lighter than the 777F.
At the November 2021 Dubai Air Show, Air Lease Corporation placed an order for seven A350Fs, with deliveries scheduled for 2026, thus becoming the launch customer for the model. Similarly, Singapore Airlines ordered seven aircraft at the 2022 Singapore Airshow, making it the launch operator for the A350F, with deliveries beginning in 2025. The cargo variant, which is 70.8 m (232 ft) in length, is expected to have a range of 8,700 km for its maximum payload.
Regarding its performance, the Airbus A350-900F freighter will be equipped with Thales Avionics and two Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines with a power output of 87,001 lbf. It will have a maximum cruise speed of 488 knots, an approach speed (Vref) of unknown value, a travel range of 15,001 km, and a fuel economy of 0.103 km/l. The service ceiling will be around 43,000 ft, and the rate of climb will be 0.06 m/s (12 ft/m). Finally, the takeoff distance will be 3,000 m, while the landing distance will be 2,000 m.
